Need New Video Card
Need New Video Card
I'm looking at buying a new video card. I currently have a Geforce 5500. If I want to play Call of Duty 4, and newer games, looks like I need a minimum Geforce 6600 but when I went to look at graphics cards, I have no clue about what half of them do. Alot of Geforce cards have initials after them like GT and GS with different prices. Best Buy sells a Geforce 8700somethin for less than a Geforce 6000somethin so now I have no clue what to buy.
I totally blame HD TVs for screwing things up.

Re: Need New Video Card
First check if your motherboard supports AGP cards, or PCI-Express.
Then use this site http://www.tomshardware.com/
Go to the video card section of that site and you can find complete reviews and comparisons of pretty much any card. They test all cards with many games and give performance results side by side with other cards.

Re: Need New Video Card
Contrary to normal wisdom in respect to gfx cards - if your motherboard supports PCI-Express then the newest nVidia GPU is your best choice:
GForce 8800 GT.
GForce 8800 GT is about 80-90% of the speed of the current fastest video card (GForce 8800 GTX) however it only cost about half as much. You can see a review of it here: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/29/geforce_8800_gt/
You probably wont get your hands on it easily though because its so new and already sold out many places (it's a popular card for obvious reasons).

I second that. It is the best bang for the buck!Nain wrote:Contrary to normal wisdom in respect to gfx cards - if your motherboard supports PCI-Express then the newest nVidia GPU is your best choice:

Re: Need New Video Card
Is that the same thing as the BFG - Geforce 8800 GT OC Graphics Card?
Re: Need New Video Card
Ya thats a slightly overclocked version. No clue if its more expensive because of it.

Re: Need New Video Card
I also might have to replace my graphics card at work. I have an ATI Radeon X1300Pro but I am very confused about the number system of these cards. They don't have a site giving like a timeline of when these cards came out and the name of the card? Would be nice to know that my card is newer than this card but not as new as this card. Also, would be nice to have the site say what the equivalent geforce card matches what I have.
Re: Need New Video Card
anyone able to help me?

Mess around on the charts and you can get a good idea of what Nvidia cards are like yours.
